Device Encryption
How To Check Your Personal Device Encryption
Microsoft Windows
Turn on BitLocker, if supported by your Windows device.
Apple macOS
Turn on FileVault encryption, if supported by your macOS device.
Smartphones and Tablets
Most modern smartphones and tablets are encrypted by default as long as the lock screen is set up. Ensure you have a biometric, strong pattern, pin, or password to protect your device. If you are unsure whether your mobile device is encrypted, check the online documentation published by your device manufacturer.
Removable Drives
Encryption is especially important for any removable drive, such as a flash drive or other USB drive. While convenient, they are easily lost or stolen. To encrypt and password protect a removable storage device:
- Insert the device and locate it in either File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS)
- Right click or ctrl+click the device
- Select Turn on BitLocker for Windows or Encrypt [Name of Device] for macOS
- Follow the prompts to create and save a unique password for the removable drive
